The name Ishmael means “God hears”. Why did the angel tell her to name him Ishmael (16 : 11)?
What did Hagar name the Lord (16 : 13)?
What characteristic of God do we learn from this story?
Abram received a promise from God. He believed God and God counted him righteous. But even then, he tried to fulfill the promise by his own power. The result was that Hagar got hurt. She did what her mistress told her to do, but their relationship suffered since this was not God’s way. Hagar tried to run away from her problems. God sees everything. Do not run away from your problems, but rather bring them to God because He hears. He will provide a solution at the right time.
Take a moment to pray something like this:
O God of Abraham, Sarah and Hagar. You who listen to our problems. I am struggling because of ______(tell God your own problems)___________________. You responded to Abraham’s concerns; you heard Hagar’s misery. Show me how to walk by faith in my problem. Amen.
