Abraham 3: Sacrifice
Read Gen 22:1–19
How did God describe Isaac (v. 2)?
How many days did they travel (v. 4)?
Who carried the wood for the sacrifice (v. 6)?
What did God require of Abraham?
What did God provide in place of Abraham’s son?
Who provided the sacrifice?
What is the saying that came from this story (v. 14)?
Who would be blessed through Abraham’s descendants (v. 18)?
What does God require of us?
True sacrifice requires total obedience. God is the one who provided the sacrifice and He did it on the mountain of the Lord. This story is given as a sign of what God would later accomplish.
Look back at Genesis 15:6. Write it down.
The only way to be right with God is to come by faith. One cannot do enough good deeds to be right before God. God is holy. Adam committed one sin and was removed from God’s presence. The result of sin is death. The only way back to God is to come to Him by faith. By faith, Abraham offered his son as a sacrifice. Figuratively his son was dead. However, God provided a substitute in place of Abraham’s son. To be right with God, each of us must accept by faith God’s sacrificial provision.
Next week we will look further at God’s law and how the blood sacrifice was God’s method for covering sin and restoring man’s relationship with Him.
